Infrared Scattering Observations in the Upper Atmosphere
نویسنده
چکیده
Observations of sky emission and absorption in the far infrared (mean wavelength 120 /•) and, simultaneously, sky emission at wavelength 6 • have been made by P. Kuhn (ESSA): from the NASA CV-990 aircraft flying at 12-km altitude over the middle Pacific at latitudes 10ø-15øN. A lack of correlation between the nearand far-infrared data, especially during times of visible cirrus cloud cover above the aircraft, indicates a wavelength-dependent atmospheric phenomenon, which is interpreted as scattering. The contributions of scattering by molecules, aerosols, water drops, and ice crystals in the upper atmosphere are estimated, and it is shown that the latter water drops and ice crystals may account for the observed phenomenon. The possible influence of scattering on past high-altitude solar observations is briefly discussed.

The near-infrared nitric oxide nightglow in the upper atmosphere of Venus.
The v' = 0 progressions of the C --> X and A --> X band systems of nitric oxide dominate the middle-UV spectrum of the night-time upper atmospheres of the Earth, Mars, and Venus. The C(0) --> A(0)+h nu radiative transition at 1.224 mum, the only channel effectively populating the A(0) level, must therefore occur also. There have been, however, no reported detections of the C(0) --> A(0) band in...
متن کاملA Computer Modeling of Mie-Scattering by Spherical Droplets Within the Atmosphere
The Earth’s atmosphere is an environment replete with particles of differ-ent sizes with various refractive indices which affect the light radiation traveling through it. The Mie scattering theory is one of the well-known light scattering techniques ap-plicable to modeling of electromagnetic scattering from tiny atmospheric particles or aerosols floating in the air or within the clouds. In this...

A fast instrument simulator is developed to simulate the observations made in cloudy atmospheres by the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS). The correlated k distribution technique is used to compute the transmissivities associated with absorbing atmospheric gases. The bulk scattering properties of ice clouds are based on the ice model used for the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spec...
متن کاملNOTE: Titan’s Atmosphere in Late Southern Spring Observed with Adaptive Optics on the W. M. Keck II 10-meter Telescope
Using adaptive optics on the W.M. Keck II telescope we imaged Titan several times during 1999 to 2001 in narrowband near-infrared filters selected to probe Titan’s stratosphere and upper troposphere. We observed a bright feature around the south pole, possibly a collar of haze or clouds. Further, we find that solar phase angle explains most of the observed east-west brightness asymmetry of Tita...
متن کاملSub - Millimetre Wavelength Region
Satellite observation of Earth's atmosphere in the millimetre and sub-millimetre wavelength region is complementary to those in the visible and infrared spectral region. The emission and opacity of the atmosphere, and scattering by ice particles are all exploited for sensing various layers of the atmosphere in terms of water vapour content, temperature, molecular composition, precipitating wate...
